The traditional Singaporean breakfast
Kaya toast are charcoal-grilled or toasted slices of bread enveloping slivers of cold butter and a generous spread of kaya, which is a traditional jam made from coconut and eggs. They are normally eaten with soft boiled eggs and a cup of coffee or tea.
This delicious breakfast is brought over to Singapore by the Hainanese, with the most popular stalls being Ya Kun
Ya Kun Kaya Toast
A history of the most popular kaya toast stall in Singapore
Loi Ah Kun started the Ya Kun Coffee stall in 1944 in the Telok Ayer Basin. They are famous for their kaya spread and good coffee. In 1972 they moved to Telok Ayer Market which is now Lau Par Sat.
In 1998 Loi Ah Kun retired and his youngest son took over. His youngest son opened a second stall in the CBD area. It was a huge success and they broke even in 2 days.
Ya Kun has since grown to over 30 outlets locally and over 20 overseas in countries such as Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand.
