Mee Siam
Mee Siam
The quintessential Singaporean dish
Mee Siam is a dish made up of bee hoon and topped with a sweet and sour gravy. The dish is normally served together with a hard boiled egg, fried beancurd, beansprouts as well as Chinese chives, Some people believe that the dish first originated from Thailand and is influenced by Thai cuisine while others believe that the dish is Malay or Peranakan in origin. Whichever is the case, Mee Siam has become symbolic of Singapore’s hawker culture since it has been recognised as one of the first foods sold by roadside hawkers along the Esplanade during the 1940s.
